Reed Schön
In interplay of cold and warm air masses
Consisting
of 58 individual terraces with are partially planted with ancient Veltliner-Vines,
the location is the most important of the vineyard.
Opened towards the Waldviertel the interplay of cold and warm air masses is prevailing. During very hot summers (like 2003) a good regeneration of the vines takes place during the night and enables to recover from the fieriness.
The soil is a pure decomposition ground, the subjacent sap mainly consists of gneiss and mica slate. Preferences of the mica slate from the winegrowing view are the very unstable layered rock formations. This means that there are softer, more water-bearing and already weathered stratums between the firm ones. Between these stratums the vine is able to root in extraordinarily deep so that it can resort to last water reserves if the summer was dry. Wines from this location and high mustweight still have noticeable acerbity, taste grapey, stuffy, but most of all minerally.
In especially good years and only in the oldest area of the reed the grapes are specifically selected and later harvested than normally, this sort is called Smaragd Ried Schön.
Assortment:
Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Ried Schön, Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Schön
